There is a gem of a spot in our city that, since its opening last summer, may have slipped your mind. Here’s a hint: it’s high above the streets of downtown Corner Brook, is free of charge and has one heck of a view of the city and the Bay of Islands. It the Green Roof at City Hall!
As many citizens of Corner Brook may know, our new, very shiny City Hall was built with the environment in mind, so much so that it even includes a Green Roof.
What is a Green Roof, you ask? It a roof that is partially or completely covered in vegetation also known as a rooftop garden. Not only is this vegetation meant to beautify what would otherwise be a dull, cold, concrete cityscape; it also serves to make City Hall “greener” figuratively and literally.
The Green Roof is one of many components of City Hall that brings it in line with LEED (Leadership in Energy Environmental Design) standard. It does this by making City Hall more environmentally friendly in many ways.
First, it serves to collect up to 3000 gallons of rainwater which is used to water the plants on the roof and in the gardens surrounding the building,
saving huge amounts of treated water.
Second, it is an insulator for the structure, keeping it warm in the winter and cool in the summer and therefore cutting down on air conditioning and heating costs and electricity use. The Green Roof also provides wildlife such as insects and birds with potential habitats and keeps air temperatures down. And, of course, we can never forget that the roof’s 18,000 plants convert carbon dioxide into oxygen. I’m sure we can all agree that a little more oxygen never hurt anyone!
Besides kicking butt at environmental friendliness, the rooftop garden is also a lovely place to go spend time. Whether you’re on your lunch break, out for a walk with friends or want a great view of the city; with its many benches and flowers, the Green Roof provides a great spot to kick back, relax and get some sun. It’s open Monday to Friday, 10:00am to 4:00pm and all you have to do is sign in at the customer service desk in the lobby and go on up to the 3rd floor.
