NORFOLK, Va. Navy has releasedtheir investigation into what happened aboardthe USS Eisenhower when eight sailors were injured in a flight deck mishapearlier this year.
On March 18, anE 2C Hawkeye aircraft attempted landing on the Ike when an arrestinggear parted. Video released by the Navy shows a cable snap as the aircraft attempted to land.
The Navy report says the root cause of the mishap was because three Eisenhower maintenance personnel didn follow procedural compliance when troubleshooting the arresting gear. The Navy says the personnel missed at least one and possibly two critical steps.
However, the investigation revealed that the circumstances of the mishap were not the result of negligence.
upon their training, the sailors reasonably believed they had properly and conscientiously completed troubleshooting procedure,
the Navy reportsaid. airmanship by the E 2 mishap aircrew prevented any casualties among the aircrew and the loss of the aircraft, while the quick response by flight deck and medical personnel facilitated timely medical treatment and evacuation of the injured personnel. Navy made several recommendations to avoid future mishaps. The report says many of those recommendations have been completed and are now in place.

The sailors injuries included a fractured ankle, wrist, pelvis and legs, skull and facial fractures and a possible traumatic brain injury.
