Beauty will take centre stage for a week dedicated to fashion on Tyneside.
Style and sophistication are on the menu as hundreds will don their gladrags to attend NE1’s Newcastle Fashion Week.
And top celebrities from the world of clothes design and music will come together for the event.
The NE1’s extravaganza will kick off today and international designer Julien Macdonald and musician and DJ Sophie Ellis Bextor will both take centre stage at events during the nine day fashion fiesta.
Later in the week, international make up artist and internet sensation Lauren Luke from South Shields will also be holding court at Northumbria University.
Sandra Tang, marketing and events manager at NE1 Ltd, said: “We’re delighted to have announced the celebrities taking part in this year’s NE1’s Newcastle Fashion Week and we’re really excited about all that will be happening in the city.
“All the events make a massive contribution to the vibrancy of the city centre but also to the bottom line for businesses. Last year’s event increased footfall into participating businesses by 53% and increased sales by 33% as well as turning the spotlight on the city and cementing its place as the fashion capital of the North East.
“We hope as many people as possible come into the city to take advantage of all the fashion happenings during NE1’s Newcastle Fashion Week there is a packed programme of events at venues across the city and many of them are completely free.”
Sophie will team up with her husband, Richard Jones,
guitarist with indie band, The Feeling, for an exclusive DJ set under the guise of ‘Me and Mrs Jones’ at the city venue, Bonbar, to launch the event.
International designer to the stars, Julien, will present all three catwalk shows in the Assembly Rooms in Newcastle on May 10. In the evening, he will be back to present the Vivienne Westwood collection from Cruise to an invited audience of VIP guests at 8pm.
Meanwhile Lauren said: “There is so much talent in the North East especially with our youth so I am thrilled to be part of NE1’s Newcastle Fashion Week and help showcase this talent and offer advice to our rising fashion stars in any way I can.”
This week models have been gearing up for the launch of Newcastle Fashion Week by lending their support to a children’s charity.
They have been sporting T shirts designed by art collective Prefab 77 to show off their eye for style at the Monument in Newcastle ahead of the event.
The designs feature an extract of the collective’s artwork installation on display in the Dr Martens store at the top of Grainger Street.
All the proceeds from sales go towards Metro Radio’s Cash For Kids to help children up to the age of 18 who are disabled, disadvantaged or suffering from abuse or neglect.
